Pre & post-operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage is now available at TAP Clinics. Here's what it does, when to book, and why your surgeon is right to recommend it.
You've done the research. You've had the consultations. The surgery date is booked. But if you stop there, you're only doing half the work.
Whether you're preparing for a C-section, general surgery, liposuction, or a cosmetic procedure, one of the most common recommendations you'll receive from your consultant is Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD. And yet, it's consistently the step people leave until the last minute, or miss altogether.
"Surgery is only the first step of your journey. What you do before and after determines how well, and how quickly, your body heals."
At TAP Clinics, we've now launched a specialist pre and post-operative MLD service delivered by our experienced therapists, adapted to your stage of healing, and guided by your surgeon's protocols throughout.
WHAT IS MLD, AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, specialised massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system the network responsible for clearing excess fluid, waste, and immune cells from your tissues. After surgery, this system is under significant stress. The body's natural response to invasive procedures is inflammation and fluid build-up, which is where targeted MLD comes in.
But the benefits go both ways. Beginning MLD before your procedure can make a measurable difference to how your body enters surgery and how it comes out.
BEFORE SURGERY: PREPARE YOUR BODY
Most people don't think about pre-operative care beyond the standard consultations. But a single pre-op MLD session, ideally 1–2 weeks before your procedure, can meaningfully shift your starting point.
IMMUNITY
Supports your immune system to help your body fight infection before and after the procedure.
INFLAMMATION
Reduces baseline swelling, giving your surgeon a clearer area to work with.
CIRCULATION
Optimises lymphatic flow and tissue health for better surgical outcomes.
MINDSET
Promotes deep relaxation and lowers anxiety ahead of your procedure.
AFTER SURGERY: ACCELERATE YOUR HEALING
Swelling, bruising, pain, and fluid build-up are a normal part of the body's response to surgery. Post-operative MLD works with your body's natural processes to move things along not force them.
Our post-op MLD sessions help to:
SWELLING & BRUISING
Significantly reduces fluid retention and bruising to speed up visible recovery.
SCARRING
Minimises fibrosis and the formation of lumps or bumps under the skin.
PAIN RELIEF
Promotes relaxation and gentle pain reduction throughout recovery.
DETOX SUPPORT
Helps the body clear anaesthetics and medications more efficiently.
Every session is individually adapted to your healing stage and your surgeon's specific guidelines. Nothing is rushed. Everything is safe.
YOUR RECOVERY TIMELINE
1
Pre-op session
Typically 1 session, 1–2 weeks before your procedure to prime your lymphatic system.
2
Surgeon clearance
Written consent from your surgeon is required before we begin post-op treatment.
3
Post-op sessions begin
Often starting as soon as 2–3 days after surgery. Frequency is typically 2–3 sessions per week initially, then spaced to suit your personal recovery.
4
Ongoing support
Up to 10 post-op sessions in total, depending on your procedure and how your body responds.
Spaces fill quickly particularly for those with upcoming procedures in the near term. We recommend booking your pre-op session and securing your post-op dates at the same time to guarantee continuity of care.
